Barry Fixler opened Barry’s Estate Jewelry in Nanuet (Bardonia), Rockland County, NY in 1992. Over the years Barry’s reputation for honesty, patriotism and civic duty have endeared him to the local community. A USMC combat veteran, Barry is known for his support of wounded troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Barry was named Rockland County’s 2009 Veteran of Year for his involvement with the fund raising effort to benefit Sgt. Eddie Ryan, his donation to the reward money for missing woman Laura Garza, his Vietnam combat service at the Siege of Khe Sanh (Echo 2/26, Hill 861A), and countless other humanitarian acts.
Fixler also gained national attention when two gunman attempted to kill him and rob his store on Valentine’s day 2004. The surveillance tape (watch it here) from his store shows Barry successfully defending himself with a handgun, dropping one thug while the other runs away. Barry’s reaction: “I’ve always been lucky when it comes to bullets.”
Barry is driven by his sense of civic duty and patriotism. Barry’s book, Semper Cool: One Marine’s Fond Memories of Vietnam, is his latest fundraising project for the benefit of wounded warriors and their families. “It’s all for the country, I’m donating 100% of my royalties,” Barry said.
